Philadelphia's Martial Arts Academy
About The Garden
20+ years of coaching. Zero sales pitches. A gym built on the conviction that real training changes lives.
Our Story
Planted in Philadelphia. Growing Every Day.
The Garden didn't start with a business plan. It started with a conviction: that martial arts training should be honest, accessible, and free from the ego that poisons so many gyms. We chose the name because a garden is a place where things grow — deliberately, patiently, and with care.
In Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood, we built a space that reflects that philosophy. Sunlight pours through oversized windows onto clean mats. There are no sales pitches on the wall, no contracts to pressure you into staying. People stay because the training is real, the coaches invest in them personally, and the community holds each other accountable.
We teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — both Gi and No-Gi — and Muay Thai. Our kids program introduces young athletes to martial arts the right way. Every class follows a structured curriculum, every student has a path, and every promotion is earned on the mat.
Train hard, safely, with respect. That isn't a slogan — it's the standard we hold every person in this building to, from white belts to black belts, from first-timers to competitors.
"You have to want this. We don't sell. We don't pressure. We just train."

What We Teach
Our Programs
Four disciplines, one philosophy: build real skill, not just move people through a belt system. Every program follows a structured curriculum with coach-verified progression.
BJJ Gi
Grip fighting, collar chokes, and the deep strategic game that made Jiu-Jitsu legendary. Structured 13-week curriculum — every class builds on the last.
Learn MoreBJJ No-Gi
Underhooks, leg locks, and wrestling-based entries for a faster, more fluid game. Same structured curriculum, no kimono required.
Learn MoreMuay Thai
Punches, kicks, elbows, knees, and clinch work — taught with precision, not chaos. You'll build real striking skill, not just cardio.
Learn MoreKids BJJ
Seeds (4-5), Sprouts (6-9), and Buds (10-12). Coaches who know every kid by name, building confidence and discipline that carries off the mat.
Learn MoreYour Training Platform
Everything Included. Not Add-Ons.
Most gyms charge extra for an app, a curriculum, or video access. Here, it's all standard — because your growth shouldn't come with a surcharge.

Meet the Coaches
At The Garden, coaching isn't a side gig — it's a craft. Our coaches bring years of competition experience and invest in every student personally. They don't just demonstrate techniques — they know your name, your game, and what you need to work on next.

Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu under Balance Studios, Muay-Thai Kru under Ajarns Andy Russell and Sakasem Kanthawong Judah is the head instructor and technical foundation of The Garden MMA. A lifelong martial artist, he began training in 1997 and developed through decades of disciplined practice, competition, and coaching across Muay Thai, mixed martial arts, and grappling. His path reflects long-term commitment to skill, adaptability, and the reality of learning through doing. Judah competed for nine years at the amateur level and more than four years as a professional fighter. In 2002, he became a Muay Thai instructor and expanded his training into Sambo and MMA while coaching and competing with the Philadelphia Fight Factory. During this time, he served as a training partner to future MMA standouts including Eddie Alvarez and Zach Makovsky, sharpening his craft in one of the region’s most competitive environments. Judah made his professional MMA debut in 2008 and his professional Muay Thai debut in 2009, competing both nationally and internationally. His career includes a bout in Cambodia against the 2010 Pradal Serey national champion, reflecting his willingness to test himself across rulesets, cultures, and disciplines. While he no longer competes in Muay Thai or MMA, his approach to training remains rooted in real experience, technical honesty, and respect for the demands of the art. Today, Judah continues to compete in No-Gi grappling and remains deeply active in his own development. He won the first Finishers Open at 145 lbs in 2018, placed third at the IBJJF No-Gi World Championships as a brown belt in 2021, and was awarded his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in January 2022 by Phil Migliarese and Ricardo Migliarese.

Keren Or
Open Mat
Keren is the architect behind The Garden MMA. A mother, artist, and photographer, she approaches everything she builds with intention and care for the long game. She began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in late 2016, drawn to a practice that rewards presence, resilience, and consistency — and hasn't stopped since. She teaches classes, competes in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, and holds a purple belt. Beyond the mat, Keren is responsible for everything that makes the academy function and grow. She oversees operations, systems, design, marketing, technology, finances, and community development — every role required to build a gym from the ground up and keep it running well. In 2017 she became a certified yoga instructor through Dhyana Yoga, which deepened her understanding of movement, recovery, and longevity, and continues to shape how the academy supports its members at every stage of training. Her background spans IT, web development, and years as a global travel advisor for corporations, government organizations, and Ivy League institutions — a combination that brings real organizational depth to her work. She is also the founder of SkillTrack MMA, a platform born from her own experience as an academy owner, designed to help martial arts schools track skill development, manage memberships, and build stronger communities through tools that actually serve athletes.

This gym is a treasure. Other gyms can be inhospitable and dangerous. Judah and Keren demonstrate care for practitioners and do not put them at risk of injury. The progressions of the lessons are thought out and build seamlessly on one another. Excellent gym!! This gym is a treasure. Other gyms can be inhospitable and dangerous. The Garden MMA is truly a gem in the heart of the Germantown community, located conveniently near Wayne Junction. Judah and Keren have created an inspiring and safe space that caters to everyone—whether you're experienced, new, a hobbyist, or a competitor. If you value authenticity, community, and a raw, real environment, The Garden MMA delivers. I'm especially impressed by the gym's cleanliness, the thoughtful use of the space, and its ideal location—close to my home and the R1 train station. The layout is both functional and calming, with big, bright windows that let in natural light, creating a zen-like, feng shui atmosphere as you train. In the winter, the warm and cozy vibes are exactly what you need. The inclusivity here is a major plus. They offer women's self-defense and yoga classes, making the gym welcoming for everyone. I felt completely at ease during my visit and am excited to sign up for a membership in January. I highly recommend checking out The Garden MMA—this gym is truly special!

The facility is beautiful. The mats are clean and top of the line. Judah is a wonderful coach, very knowledgeable, patient and breaks down every move in a way that you understand the mechanics of the move, when and why it would be effective in a match and how to defend, a true understanding of the art of eight limbs and bjj. Judah is such a positive and passionate coach that it's hard not to feel welcomed and a part of the team the moment you walk through the doors. The wealth of knowledge is apparent, whether it is in muay thai or Brazilian jiujitsu. You can't find a finer facility in the city. Judah and Keren have brought a truly great academy to reality and I can't recommend it more. I have trained at many gyms over the years and have never felt more at home than I have here.
