How to Start Your Kids in Martial Arts

A parent's guide to beginning your child's martial arts journey — what to expect, how to choose the right program, and why it matters.

So you're thinking about enrolling your child in martial arts. Maybe you've heard about the benefits — discipline, confidence, fitness, self-defense. But the world of martial arts can seem confusing from the outside. Where do you start?

Choosing the Right Style

Different martial arts emphasize different skills:

    • Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on ground-based grappling and submissions. It's excellent for self-defense because it allows a smaller person to control a larger opponent, and the training involves no striking.
    • Muay Thai is a striking art using punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. It builds cardiovascular fitness and coordination.
    • Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) combines elements of various styles.

For younger children, we generally recommend starting with Jiu-Jitsu. The training involves problem-solving, close contact with training partners (which builds comfort and trust), and the ability to practice at full resistance without anyone getting hurt.

What to Look for in a Gym

Not all martial arts schools are created equal. When visiting gyms, pay attention to:

    • Instructor engagement: Are they actively teaching and correcting, or just supervising?
    • Class structure: Is there a clear curriculum, or does it seem random?
    • Student behavior: Are kids focused and respectful, or chaotic?
    • Safety protocols: Are proper mats and equipment in place?
    • Culture: Does the gym seem welcoming and supportive?

Our Approach at The Garden

Our kids' programs are divided by age and development:

    • Seeds & Sprouts (Ages 4-9): Focus on fundamental movements, listening skills, and basic techniques through engaging, age-appropriate instruction
    • Buds (Ages 10-12): More advanced techniques, introduction to live sparring, and options for competition

Every class incorporates character development alongside physical skills. We talk about concepts like respect, perseverance, and integrity — and we reinforce them through how we train.

What to Expect in the First Class

Your child doesn't need any equipment or experience for their first class. Just comfortable athletic clothes (no zippers or pockets). They'll be welcomed, shown what to do, and paired with appropriate partners.

Most kids are nervous before their first class and excited after. It's normal. We're good at making new students feel comfortable.

First class is always free. Bring your child in and let them experience it for themselves.
